Bridges & Crowns

We can replace missing or damaged teeth with attractive, natural looking crowns and bridges. Missing teeth can cause dental and health problems, and after a comprehensive evaluation of your particular needs, a crown or bridge may be the right solution for your dental issues.

Dental Crowns

When the structure of a tooth is compromised by decay or damage, a dental crown or “cap” is used to cover the entire surface of a tooth. The purpose of a crown is to restore or improve shape, size, and function. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for proper function.

Crowns, when cemented into place, fully encase the visible portion of the tooth that lies at or above the gum line. Most teeth treated for root canal therapy require a crown to hold a tooth together after treatment. Porcelain, zirconium, or ceramic crowns are matched to the color of your natural teeth.

Reasons for a crown include:

  • Broken or fractured teeth
  • Cosmetic enhancement
  • Decayed teeth
  • Fractured or large fillings
  • Coverage over an implant
  • Root canal treatment

Dental Bridges

We use bridges to fill in the spaces left by missing teeth. A pontic, or artificial tooth, fills in the missing space and is held in place by crowns that are either affixed to the adjacent (abutment) teeth or to dental implants.

Placing Your Bridge or Crown

After preparation of a tooth or teeth for a crown or bridge, we will take an impression to provide an exact mold of your teeth for the dental laboratory. We will determine the correct shade for the crown or bridge to match the color of your existing teeth. Then a comfortable, natural-looking temporary crown or temporary bridge is fabricated and placed to protect the prepared teeth until the permanent crown or bridge is made at the laboratory. The next appointment would be to cement the new crown or bridge permanently into place.

Crowns and bridges are designed to last a lifetime, yet they can become loose or fall out if the underlying bone becomes unhealthy. To ensure the longevity of your crown or bridge, good oral hygiene and regular check-ups are strongly recommended.

Implants are beneficial not only because they address aesthetic concerns with tooth loss but also because they help maintain bone structure.

When you lose a tooth, the bone where that tooth once was begins to deteriorate and shrink away. This can have a detrimental effect on the surrounding teeth by causing tipping, turning, or caving, eventually creating problems with function and bite, resulting in further tooth loss.

Implants are anchored in the bone to help prevent bone loss. Additionally, implants mimic your natural tooth and provide a stable chewing surface.
